Evaluating student learning requires evidence of what students know and can do. Written responses on exams, worksheets, and homework can provide rich insight into student thinking, but making meaning of students' writing can be challenging. In this workshop, participants will learn how to analyze students' written work using qualitative coding techniques, like those commonly used in education research. We will explore how coding can reveal patterns in student thinking and how those patterns can guide targeted improvements to instruction. This workshop is inspired by my publication "A Deep Look into Designing a Task and Coding Scheme through the Lens of Causal Mechanistic Reasoning" (Noyes et al., 2022; https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jchemed.1c00959), but with an expanded focus beyond mechanistic reasoning to help future educators assess the ways of thinking most relevant to their own learning goals and teaching contexts.
